Holiday Schooling
Christmas time is upon us! It can be a very hectic time for us Moms as a lot of the decorating, cooking, and preparations fall on us. Throw homeschooling in there and it can be over-whelming for us at times.
Through the years, I’ve learned what works for our family to make the holiday season more enjoyable for us all. First I figure out when we want to take a Christmas break and work my schedule around that. I also figure out some days that will work for my children to have either a half day or a full day off 2-3 times before Christmas so they can help with certain preparations that I need help with. For instance, I pick a day that we can get the tree up and the lights on the tree as this is a huge job that I need help with. We continue to do our regular curriculum during this time, however, I also plan some days where we do what I like to call, holiday schooling.
Holiday schooling is where I throw some fun, yet educational things into our school days. We will read out of Christmas books that have short stories and poetry. My children have kept a Holiday notebook for years and we add to that each year, too. They have pictures they have colored, artwork they created, poetry and scriptures they have copied. They will write the poetry or scriptures onto nice paper and maybe do drawings around the writing or add stickers. All these projects then are put into sheet protectors to preserve them. It’s a lot of fun to go through their notebooks and see all the projects they have done through the years. This will be something they keep forever.
Last year my younger son and I read an Agatha Christie Poirot mystery together that was based during Christmas time. He really likes Agatha Christie mysteries and this allowed him to read something he likes and it was Christmas related. We discussed the book as we were reading it and it ended up being one of our favorite books.
No matter what age your children are, you can do things that make your schooling during the holidays special.
Have a wonderful and Merry Christmas! May the Lord richly bless you during this special holiday season and always!
