Yes, Mom, they’re learning!
As we begin the new school year, I would like to share some words of wisdom. Not that I’m particularly wise, but I have learned through experience some things that I hope will make this school year easier for all of us.
I used to fret and worry every waking moment (and some non-waking moments) that I wasn’t teaching my children everything they needed to learn. Believe me when I say, I nearly made myself sick over this. I would change curriculums and think this new one was even better than the one I had been using. I was on a mission to make my children the smartest, brightest, and most achieving children around. In the process of all this worrying, I was discontent and I was making my children discontent. This is not what the Lord wants for us.
If you’re worried because you think your children aren’t reading like they should be or they aren’t at the right level of math, trust me when I tell you that in the end, they will know exactly what they need to know. Our job, as their teachers, is to guide and teach them, at their level. Your child’s level in a subject may be totally different than my child’s level in a subject, even though they may be the same age. That’s okay! God made us each uniquely different. One of the very reasons I started to homeschool was because I saw that in the school system, my children were expected to be like every other child in class. This is just unrealistic. It also put a lot of pressure on my children and in some ways, made them feel bad about themselves.
Now that I’ve come through the other side by graduating my oldest son and seeing him in college, I realize that he’s doing great and learned everything he needed to learn!
I spent time worrying for nothing!! I am going to relax more and have fun with our schooling with my remaining son. The learning really does happen as long as we’re doing our best as homeschool Moms. Let’s enjoy this new school year with our children and find joy in all their learning – big or small.
